The comedian Frankie Boyle has this week won £54,650 damages against the Mirror over an article in which he was called a "racist comedian". The first libel jury trial for some time saw Frankie Boyle secure his win and follow it up with a tweet to his 1million+ followers:
I’m very happy with the jury’s decision and their unanimous rejection of the Mirror’s allegation that I am a racist. Racism is still a very serious problem in society which is why I’ve made a point of always being anti-racist in my life and work… and that’s why I brought this action.
Mr Boyle proved that often claims are brought out of principle than a desire for money - he immediately confirmed that he will be giving his damages to charity.
